Only two ranked teams fall among Super 25
USA TODAY Super 25 teams had an impressive weekend, recording a 21-2 mark in games Friday and Saturday night, with one game suspended by lightning and one team on a bye week.
Check out a complete rundown of how the Top 25 fared, and click on a state to find scores from schools across the country.
Everybody in the Top 10 came away with victories, including DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) and Gateway (Monroeville, Pa.), which rebounded after opening week losses.
Not so fortunate were the week's two upset victims, No. 11 Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) and No. 12 Jenks, Okla.
One week after a 21-13 win over Glenville (Cleveland) in the Ohio vs. USA Kirk Herbstreit Challenge, Poly returned to its home state to suffer a 20-7 loss to Birmingham (Lake Balboa, Calif.), squaring its record at 1-1. Birmingham running back Milton Knox called it "the biggest win in Birmingham football history."
Also tasting early defeat was Jenks, the state's defending Class 6A state champion, which fell 43-42 in overtime to Union in the 40th annual "Backyard Bowl" played before 20,000 fans at the University of Tulsa's Chapman Stadium. Tulsa World columnist Jimmie Tramel calls the Jenks-Union rivalry the best in the nation.
No. 16 Booker T. Washington (Miami) had its game suspended by lightning in the third quarter against Central (Miami). Washington was leading 9-6 at the time. The Miami Herald says that since it's a non-district game, it is not likely to be resumed and the game won't count on either team's record.
In USA TODAY's High School Game of the Week, No. 4 St. Xavier (Cincinnati) took advantage of late turnovers by Glenville (Cleveland) to pull away to a 27-12 victory. Senior wide receiver and kicker Danny Milligan compensated for the loss of injured running back Darius Ashley by scoring two touchdowns, kicking two field goals and three extra points.
