Friday Night Lights
Throughout the high school football season, BuckeyeSports.com will be following the progress of Ohio State’s football commitments along with some of the top prospects being tracked across the country. Here is how the OSU verbal commitments and their teams fared between Sept. 16-23. All are seniors unless noted.
• OL Mike Adams and TE/WR Jake Stoneburner, Dublin (Ohio) Coffman – A 20-yard field goal by Mitch Haines with 34 seconds remaining gave the Shamrocks (5-0) a 9-7 come-from-behind win over crosstown rival Dublin Scioto.
Haines, who had missed three field-goal attempts and an extra point and had one field goal blocked earlier in the game, made the one that mattered and helped Coffman avoid an upset against the 3-2 Irish.
Trey Fairchild scored Coffman’s lone touchdown on a 2-yard run. Despite the close score, the Shamrock offense did move the ball well. They outgained Scioto 335-135 and punted only once.
Stoneburner had seven catches for 46 yards.
• K/P Ben Buchanan, Westerville (Ohio) Central – The Warhawks remained winless after a 29-22 loss to Big Walnut, but Buchanan certainly cannot be blamed for the defeat.
Buchanan kicked a school-record 57-yard field goal, one of five kicks he converted. His only miss was from 60 yards and his other makes were from 29, 44, 46 and 41 yards.
• OL Michael Brewster, Orlando (Fla.) Edgewater – After losing for the first time Sept. 7 at Tallahassee Lincoln, the Eagles got back on track with a 31-9 win at Orlando Evans.
Edgewater (2-1) scored 21 second-quarter points to pull away in its Class 6A, District 3 opener. The Eagles, ranked No. 2 in the Orlando Sentinel’s Super 6, face No. 4 Apopka (4-0) Sept. 29.
• DT Garrett Goebel, Lombard (Ill.) Montini Catholic – Goebel and the Broncos’ defense blanked Aurora Marmion Academy, 35-0, in a Suburban Catholic Conference game.
Marmion had scored 87 points in its first two games of the season, but the Broncos handed the Cadets their third straight shutout loss. Montini (5-0) led 21-0 at halftime and held the Cadets to 39 yards rushing and 63 yards passing for the game.
• WR DeVier Posey, Cincinnati La Salle – Posey caught four passes for 63 yards and scored two touchdowns in La Salle’s 51-10 home win over Cincinnati Anderson.
Posey scored on a pass reception and also added a punt return for a score for 4-1 La Salle.
• OL J.B. Shugarts, Klein, Texas – The Bearkats had their best offensive performance of the season in a 30-16 win over host Missouri City Fort Bend Marshall.
Klein (3-1) earned its second consecutive road win in come-from-behind fashion. The Buffalos had a 10-7 halftime lead, but the Bearkats rallied with 23 unanswered points in the second half. C.J. Palmer and Nick Farley each had touchdown runs, and Tyler Boss added a 32-yard interception return for another score.
Marshall added a fourth-quarter touchdown, and the Buffalos outgained Klein 256-177 in the defeat.
• MLB Andrew Sweat, Washington (Pa.) Trinity – Sweat played tailback in a 44-17 defeat against Pittsburgh Chartiers Valley.
Sweat, who plays fullback for the Hillers offense, was moved to tailback following an injury to Mike Yancich. Sweat ran for 63 yards and scored on a 15-yard touchdown, but the Hillers (2-2) could not rally in their Class AAA Big Seven Conference opener.
On defense, Sweat added 17 tackles, but Trinity struggled to stop Chartiers Valley’s no-huddle, option offensive attack. The Colts finished with over 350 yards of total offense.
• RB/LB Devoe Torrence, Massillon (Ohio) Washington – The Tigers fell to 2-3 after losing a 56-52 shootout to Mentor.
Torrence had a big night for Massillon, running for 283 yards and four touchdowns. He was nearly matched, however, by Mentor’s Tom Worden, who ran for 226 yards and three scores.
Torrence’s last score on a 24-yard run gave the Tigers a 45-42 lead following the extra point with 7:25 remaining, but neither team was finished offensively. Mentor answered on a 2-yard run by quarterback Bart Tanski, and Massillon answered two plays later on a Steve Yoder 21-yard touchdown run.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, Tanski led the Cardinals on a game-winning drive soon after, capped by an 8-yard pass to Steve Orkis to put Mentor ahead for good with 24 seconds remaining.
• DE/LB/FB/HB Nathan Williams, Washington Court House (Ohio) Miami Trace – Williams unofficially had seven tackles in a 32-12 loss to South Central Ohio League foe Clarksville Clinton-Massie.
Williams also ran six times for 16 yards, but the Panthers (1-3) could do little on offense. The Falcons built a 20-6 halftime lead and led 32-6 late in the fourth quarter before Jimmy Eddlemon added a late touchdown,
Williams also caught one pass for 11 yards.
• LB Jordan Whiting, Louisville (Ky.) Trinity – Whiting, a verbal member of OSU’s class of 2009, had eight tackles as the Shamrocks got back on the winning track with a 48-12 win over Louisville Eastern.
Trinity had blown an 11-point lead vs. Cincinnati St. Xavier a week prior, but that was not a problem against the previously unbeaten Eagles. The Shamrocks (3-1) led 27-0 at halftime and cruised to the win.
Here is a look at several other prospects from around the country that Ohio State is tracking. All are seniors unless otherwise noted.
• DE Quinton Coples, Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy – Coples and the Tigers defeated the Marshall University subvarsity team, 13-9, Sept. 16 at Huntington, W.Va.
Coples and the defensive line kept the Thundering Herd off balance, and Hargrave never trailed. The Herd was held to under 150 yards of total offense.
The Tigers (3-1) were scheduled to face Salisbury University Sept. 23. Results were unavailable.
• WR/DB Michael Floyd, St. Paul (Minn.) Cretin-Derham Hall – Floyd ran for a touchdown and caught another in a 42-14 win over Stillwater at the University of St. Thomas.
Floyd broke a 7-7 tie with an 11-yard run in the second quarter. He later caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Nance with 11 seconds remaining before halftime. Cretin-Derham Hall (4-0) added 21 more points in the second half to finish the rout.
Floyd ran for 106 yards on eight carries and caught three passes for 25 yards.
• LB Shayne Hale, Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway – The Gators were less than 20 seconds away from a loss at Norwin when Brian Williams saved the day for Gateway.
He returned a kick 62 yards for a score with 14.1 seconds remaining to help Gateway (3-1) win 37-36. It was one of three kickoffs Gateway returned for a touchdown.
Norwin had taken the lead with 34.9 seconds remaining when quarterback Alex Dennison connected with Mike Shanahan on an 18-yard touchdown pass.
• CB Brendan Harris, Miami Booker T. Washington – Despite not playing a full game in three weeks, the Tornadoes (2-0) did not lose a step in a 47-0 rout of Fort Lauderdale.
Harris caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Torrance Moise, who was forced into action when starting QB Sancho McDonalds left the game in the second quarter with a right Achilles tendon injury. Harris and the defense also held the Flying L’s to minus-2 yards of total offense.
The Tornadoes had not played since Sept. 8, a game vs. Miami Central that was postponed in the third quarter by lightning. The game most likely will not be made up. Their other game was a 36-3 win at Summerville, S.C., Aug. 25.
• WR Josh Jarboe, Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove – The Saints fell to 1-3 after a 35-25 loss to Atlanta Marist.
The War Eagles built a 28-0 lead before Cedar Grove attempted to rally in the third quarter. The Saints got two third-quarter touchdown runs by Trence Henry, and Cedar Grove cut the lead to nine (28-19) on a Xavier Avery 11-yard run early in the fourth quarter. However, Marist was able to hold on for the win.
• OL Josh Jenkins, Parkersburg, W.Va. – Jenkins and the Parkersburg offense dominated the line of scrimmage in a 51-0 win over Lewisburg Greenbrier East.
The Big Reds (5-0) had 454 yards of total offense – 382 on the ground – in the win. Parkersburg running back Matt Lindamood ran for two scores and caught another. He finished with 137 yards rushing and moved over the 1,000-yard barrier for the season.
• DE Willie Mobley, Eden Prairie, Minn. – Only the weather could keep Mobley and the Eagles defense at bay in a 21-0 win at Apple Valley Eastview.
Both teams waited out thunderstorms in the area before Eden Prairie (4-0) dominated the Lightning of Eastview. The Eden Prairie defense held Eastview to 85 rushing yards and 41 passing yards.
• QB Terrelle Pryor, Jeannette, Pa. – Terrelle Pryor completed all seven of his passes for 169 yards and a touchdown in a 64-7 win at Alverton Southmoreland.
Terrelle Pryor also added 143 yards rushing on three carries – all for touchdowns – in the win for 4-0 Jeannette.
• LB Etienne Sabino, Miami Dr. Michael M. Krop – The Lightning were held to minus-61 yards rushing in a 21-10 upset loss to Miami Norland.
Sabino accounted for two of Krop’s points when he made a safety tackle following an errant snap on a Norland punt. A 47-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Quan Fletcher was Krop’s only other score. However, the Vikings had already built a 21-0 lead before the Lightning (3-1) got on the scoreboard.
The Lightning had two final drives that both started in Norland territory, but both ended with an interception.
• WR Cordale Scott, Cleveland Glenville – The Tarblooders routed host Cleveland John Adams 50-0, but Scott did not play due to a separated shoulder.
• RB Lamaar Thomas, Fort Washington (Md.) Friendly – Friendly crushed Temple Hills Crossland, 36-0. On nine carries, Thomas picked up 122 yards.
• DT Justin Thompson, Torrence (Calif.) El Camino Junior College – Thompson had a sack and three tackles in a 31-26 win at Walnut (Calif.) Mt. San Antonio.
El Camino (4-0) built a 12-0 first-quarter lead and held on for the win.
• CB Charles Whitlock, Chester, S.C. – Whitlock got the start at quarterback for the first time in nearly a year and led the Cyclones to a 30-0 win over Lugoff-Elgin.
Whitlock played quarterback due to an injury suffered by Gene McCaskill, who was healthy enough to play receiver and caught two of Whitlock’s four touchdown passes.
