Footballs, basketball with Pryor's signature on sale on Internet site
Terrelle Pryor's name is known nationally. The Jeannette senior quarterback/defensive back is ranked the No. 1 player in the country by some scouting services.
Now some people are actually trying to make money off his name.
Three footballs and a basketball with Terrelle Pryor's autographs are being sold on eBay. They are going for anywhere from $49.99-$99.99.
Jeannette coach Ray Reitz said Terrelle Pryor has signed numerous autographs, never thinking anyone would try to sell them.
The ordeal has upset Reitz and he said Jeannette probably will not let any fans near Terrelle Pryor after games.
"It really is a shame that we've gotten to the point where people try and exploit a high school kid's name," Reitz said. "We're getting people after games coming up to him and asking him for his autograph. We don't know who they are and you'd think they might just want his autograph. Now we might have to try and control it."
Football Jones
Paul Jones is only a sophomore, but is performing well above his years at Sto-Rox.
Jones, in his first season as a starter, is the WPIAL's leading passer after four games, completing 58 of 102 passes for 851 yards and nine touchdowns. He has helped Sto-Rox to a 3-1 record.
"I've been coaching varsity football as an assistant or head coach since 1988, and he has the strongest arm of any quarterback I've had," said Sto-Rox coach Jason Ruscitto.
Jones is 6 feet 2, 200 pounds and also plays basketball and baseball.
"I don't think there's a question of whether he will be a Division I college prospect. He is one," Ruscitto said.
Also, Sto-Rox senior Isaiah Scott leads the WPIAL in receptions with 26 for 323 yards. Ruscitto said some Mid-American Conference colleges are starting to show interest in Scott (6-2, 200).
For Pat's sake
Beaver isn't changing the name of its football stadium, but the school has decided to honor legendary coach Pat Tarquinio with something inside the stadium.
The school has voted to name the field Pat Tarquinio Field at Gypsy Glenn Stadium.
Many don't realize Tarquinio is the third-winningest coach in WPIAL history with a record of 269-43-11. He coached at Beaver from 1966-99 and had a record of 242-101-11, with three WPIAL titles and 12 conference titles. He also coached at Ellwood City before Beaver.
Tarquinio retired from his head coaching position after the 1999 season, but he's still coaching these days as an assistant at Hopewell.
Point counterpoint
Two WPIAL teams are No. 1 and 2 in the state in scoring. Jeannette is first, averaging 57.3 points a game, and Serra second at 50.3.
On the other hand, one WPIAL team has yet to score this season. Waynesburg has been outscored, 91-0, in four games.
Locke speaks
Red Locke refuted an earlier report in the Post-Gazette saying he resigned as Bishop Canevin's coach. Locke wants to make it clear he was fired.
Locke, 67, guided Bishop Canevin to the WPIAL playoffs in all 19 years as coach.
"They wanted me to be a consultant to a new coach and I said I wouldn't do that," Locke said. "They said they had problems with the administration of the entire [baseball] program.
"I guess it's like George Bush. It's not that people don't like Bush. It's just that they don't like how he is handling the war."
Sister vs. sister
Karlyn Timko, a junior at Chartiers-Houston, won the WPIAL Class AA Section 5 girls' tennis singles championship Friday. To win the title, Timko had to beat her sister, Tanya, a freshman. Karlyn Timko won, 6-4, 6-2.
The oldest Timko girl is Jaci, a standout senior softball player at Chartiers-Houston who does not play tennis.
