Penn State's dismal season through a fan's eyes

Disappointment. That one word describes Penn State’s season to this point.

The season started on a promising note, with big victories over Florida International, Notre Dame and Buffalo. Confidence was high going into the huge matchup with Michigan. The Wolverines have owned Penn State, defeating them nine years straight, including 2007, in which the Wolverines edged past a better Nittany Lions team, 14-9.

Penn State did not show up in Ann Arbor. The offense was lethargic and sluggish, and if they showed even a spark of life, Penn State wins, easily. The season got even worse the next week, as Penn State was upset 27-20, at the hands of the Illinois Fighting Illini. Fans blame quarterback Anthony Morelli’s erratic play for the losses. Morelli, a senior, has shined at times, except when it mattered most.

Morelli becomes frantic and turns into an interception machine. Penn State’s defense has dominated opposition, but to no avail. Joe Paterno’s crew came into the Iowa game with a full head of steam, and overwhelmed the much weaker Hawkeyes, 27-7. Senior Rodney Kinlaw took the spotlight as former starter Austin Scott was suspended indefinitely. Kinlaw rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns to pace a strong Nittany Lions rushing attack. The next week, Penn State dominated a favored Wisconsin team, 38-7, on homecoming weekend, and head into Indiana, then take on No. 1 Ohio State the next week. Penn State is 5-2 (2-2 in Big Ten play) which isn’t bad, but the 2-2 record in the Big Ten is abysmal. The Lions most realistic hope for the rest of 2007 is an

Outback Bowl birth and the most important part of this season is landing the nation’s No. 1 recruit, PA’s own Terrelle Pryor, the juggernaut QB from Jeanette. Having a talent such as Terrelle Pryor could propel the Nittany Lions back to the promised land in 2008.

Andrew Singo is a junior at Rockwood Area High School. His parents are Jamie Singo and Leanne Mitchell. His future plans are to go to college and major in journalism.
