WPIAL Class AA: Jeannette advances over Shady Side Academy, 42-6
If Jeannette has had a target on its back all season as the defending WPIAL Class AA champion and the top-ranked team in the WPIAL and PIAA, nobody has come close to knocking it off.
Last night the Jayhawks (11-0) punched their ticket to the WPIAL semifinals with a 42-6 quarterfinal win against Shady Side Academy (9-2) at Penn-Trafford. Shady Side Academy had allowed as many as 25 points in a game once this season.
Jeannette, which entered the game having outscored its opposition by a combined 562-38 margin, wasted little time jumping on Shady Side Academy, which was making its first appearance in the quarterfinals since it lost to Aliquippa in 2000. Jeannette posted 22 second-quarter points in taking a 28-0 halftime lead.
Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor scored on three touchdown runs in the opening half. Terrelle Pryor finished with 13 carries for 82 yards. He also completed 6 of 10 passes for 130 yards.
James Derry also scored two touchdowns for the Jayhawks on runs of 10 and 8 yards. Jeannette's Jordan Hall led all rushers with 86 yards on nine carries. Hall also caught three passes for 56 yards for the Jayhawks.
Jeannette built its lead to 42-0 in the final quarter before Indians quarterback Dan Rooney connected with Brian Nickel for a 35-yard touchdown to avoid the shutout.
Jeannette recorded 20 first downs and had 455 yards in total offense in the game.
The Jayhawks will face Aliquippa (9-2) in the semifinals at a site and time to be determined next week.
Jeannette defeated Aliquippa, 19-14, in the quarterfinals last year.
