Pryor puts on show in title game
Terrelle Pryor and the Jeannette Jayhawks continued their dominance over the rest of the WPIAL with an easy victory in the Class AA final. Terrelle Pryor threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Jayhawks put the mercy rule on Beaver Falls in a 61-12 rout at Heinz Field Friday.
Terrelle Pryor rushed for 166 yards on 12 carries. He was also 5-of-6 passing for 81 yards for Jeannette (13-0), which racked up 449 yards of total offense. He ran for touchdowns of 14 and 60 yards and threw for scored of 13 and 35 yards.
Jeannette got up 21-0 before Beaver Falls' Todd Thomas returned a kick 85 yards for a touchdown. The Jayhawks led 42-6 at halftime.
Pittsburgh C.C. 35, Gateway 34, OT: Tino Sunseri's one-yard touchdown run and subsequent extra point by Matt Oczypok gave Pittsburgh Central Catholic a 35-34, overtime win over Gateway in the Class AAAA title game.
Pittsburgh Central Catholic (13-0) led 28-13 with 1:02 remaining in the game after Emmanuelle Matthews returned an interception 85 yards for a touchdown.
But Gateway (11-2) scored two touchdown sin the final minute. The first came on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Robert Kalkstein to Cory Brown with 31 seconds remaining.
After recovering the onsides kick, Gateway scored on a hook-and-ladder play with one second remaining in which Cameron Saddler took a pitch from Jonathon Pryor and scored. The Gators scored on a two-point conversion to tie the game.
Gateway also scored first in overtime on a one-yard run by Saddler but Ryan Lichtenstein's extra-point attempt failed.
Serra 10, Springdale 6: Serra Catholic won its first WPIAL title in 27 years as the Eagles defeated Springdale 10-6 in the Class A championship game.
Serra (13-0) quarterback T.J. Heatherington threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Chris Loving in the first quarter.
Springdale (10-2) scored its only touchdown when Alan Rivera recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to make it 7-6. But the Eagles added a 23-yard field goal by Nick Rossi with 3:05 remaining in the game to make it 10-6.
Thomas Jefferson 34, Montour 0: Thomas Jefferson cruised to its third WPIAL Class AAA title in four years as the Jaguars blanked previously unbeaten Montour 34-0.
Orlando Torres scored four touchdowns for Thomas Jefferson (13-0), which won its four championship overall and was making its fifth straight appearance in a title game.
